Once upon a time, there was a young boy. This young boy was very strong and wanted to do whatever he could to get stronger. Because of that, he was an easy target for the darkness--specifically it's master. One day his home was destroyed, swallowed up by the monsters that the master of darkness controlled. One by one each island that the boy knew was taken and then someone he cared about dearly was taken from him as well. The boy wanted to save her and Ansem tricked him into believing he could help.
[Where he's at, Sora draws his legs up, eyes closed.]
As his whole world disappeared into darkness the boy let himself be consumed by it as well and monsters from the deepest dark that existed grabbed a hold of him and dragged him down with them; drowning him in the evil that lingered beyond the world he knew. The shadows crept into his mind and started to drive him mad, whispering terrible things to him, encouraging him to do even worse things. It slowly consumed him until there was nothing left of the boy he use to be.
Now he was just like the master. Just the shadows that were at his beck and call and he thrived on the power.
[Sora paused, his voice softer--lower now as he continues.]
Every person he came across, he would take their hearts from their bodies and let them disappear into darkness as he took the power their hearts offered. Each heart helped him grow stronger and he lost sight of the cause he had been fighting for original, wanting nothing more than to keep destroying and getting stronger.
And even in the places where the light was the strongest, he thrived and fought in the name of his master, allowing the shadows to roam freely and even now they still do. Seeping into worlds and tearing them apart, ripping people away until they're just like the boy. Until there's nothing left but evil.
[ Jim listens quietly to the story, doesn't make any oohs or ahhs, doesn't interrupt Sora even when he pauses. It's Ansem - a specific name, something real, and he's not even sure Sora realizes he said it - that tips him off that this isn't just a story. It's something real about the darkness from Sora's world, about Sora, and he hadn't expected that.
Even after Sora finishes, there's a long pause while he switches to audio. He'd asked for a scary story, but he wasn't expecting one like that. ]
[Sora hadn't even realized he'd said the name. He hadn't meant to; he'd been trying to keep it vague but looks like he'd mucked that up.
He doesn't respond for a long moment, mulling over if he wants to delve into the details of it--debating with himself on if he wants to tell the truth or not.
When he does finally respond his voice is much softer than it was before and he sounds very tired all of a sudden.]
[ The confirmation and the tone of Sora's voice hurt, a little, and Jim wonders if he'd done the right thing in calling it out at all. He wants to set it right, but he's not any of his friend that are good at this kind of thing.
[ Jim's not going to push Sora too hard - he understands wanting to put things away and not deal with them anymore - but there's still trouble in his voice and he doesn't want to leave it alone. ]

If this was any other place I'd say ghost stories but...

-though other worlds' scary stories might be pretty cool.

-Sora?
[ He's not sure what to follow that up with. ]
What was his name?

...Riku. He..he's my best friend.
[And then even quieter.]
I almost lost him. He and Kairi both.

Still. he did set all this off, so: ]
Do you want to talk about it?

[A lot worse. At least he'd been able to save Riku and Kairi both. And then they had ended up saving him in return.]
I don't really know what to say. I mean, Riku's okay now. He's a Keyblade Master like me so it's okay I just...
[He still had nightmares about it. The what ifs still haunted him.]

[It comes out softly, Sora going silent for a moment after the fact. Would it ever be okay? He wasn't really sure.]
What matters is that Riku's alive. And so is Kairi. That's..that's what matters the most.

[ Jim casts around for something to say, and comes up short. ]
Good. But if you ever want to talk about the stuff that's not okay...

[It comes out softly after a moment of silence.]
I appreciate it. A lot.
