[Last night hadn't been fun. It had been terrifying and Sora honestly wanted to believe it had all just been a bad dream but he knew it wasn't. He didn't like being scared of his friends but it was hard to shake the fear, especially of--

Sora looks down at his device as it chimes and honestly? He almost just deletes it. Not out of spite but out of underlying fear. He refrains, though, and instead just pauses in his walking to shoot a quick message back.]

Hey

Are you okay?

[ He curses as soon as he gets the text back. Though whether it's in frustration of his own stupidity or concern that he just screwed things up when he sees who the sender is, he's not sure what.

But what he is at least... vaguely more certain of is the touch of relief that finds him when it's Sora not telling him to leave him alone. Not that he would blame him. ]

are YOU?

[ That's the more important thing here. ]

I'm okay. Just tired.

[And still fighting that lingering fear that's hard to shake but it's not something he's going to outright tell Zack right now.]

Going to find Roxas. You with Jim, Zell and Kunsel again?

yeah I'm with them. they had eyes like mine.

[ So, he didn't go after them. Only possibly other people- people who are supposed to be their friends. He hasn't asked yet. Maybe he never will. ]

look I know it won't change what happened. but I'm sorry and I'll understand if you don't wanna talk for a while.

[ Or ever again. But saying that feels like it would end up being that way. Even if he wouldn't blame him. ]

Why wouldn't I want to talk to you?

[Well, okay. He knows why, he understands Zack's line of thought but--

Ugh. Screw this.

Sora switches over to voice on his end, looking up at the sky as he speaks.]

Things happen sometimes and we can't control them. We can't stop them from happening. I've seen it happen before I came here. My friends and I--we all went through it. We've all done things that we...that hurt others or could have hurt others. But that doesn't mean it's what we wanted to do. So I've already forgiven you, Zack. And I don't want to not talk to you. You're my friend.

[ 'do you really have to ask-'

The message never gets sent though. Because then the next message comes through and Zack's listening. Staring and listening. It takes a while for him to even think of what to say. Because maybe of course Sora would forgive him- but maybe he wouldn't have. And maybe he would have continued to be afraid. But Sora's been through some things- and from the sound of things, a lot more than Zack might have first thought. But that...

It takes him another moment, but he does switch to audio. Because he's not going to hide behind texts over this anymore, especially if Sora isn't either. His voice might sound raw and tired, but he does his best to ignore it- hopes Sora will, too. ]

Things do happen that we have no control over- but I should have had control over this. Part of being SOLDIER means protecting people. And sure, sometimes you can't help it when people are afraid of you, regardless, but I gave you one hell of a reason to be.

And being a keyblade wielder means I'm suppose to protect the worlds and everyone in them and I haven't done a very good job of that since I've been here. We're all out of our element, Zack. Sometimes things happen that we can't control.

[Sora sighs softly, fighting down a cough by making it sound like he's clearing his throat instead.]

My best friend let darkness consume him and tried to kill me, Zack. And I forgave him. So I'm forgiving you, too.

[ 'You don't have to pro-'

But that's another thought that's lost- but it's hard not to lose it at a confession like that. Zack stares wide-eyed at his tablet, unblinking, as something in him twists hard. ]

Your best friend tried to kill you?

[Sora's quiet for a moment, starting to walk again as he grips the strap of his backpack with his free hand tightly to anchor himself before he attempts to tell this story.]

Back..when this all started, well, started for Riku, Kairi and I, Ansem the Seeker of Darkness manipulated Riku and used the darkness that was already in his heart to corrupt him even more. He had Riku...Riku was the real chosen one but when Ansem got to him first, the keyblade found me. So in order to get the keyblade back, Riku and I fought, multiple times. He would have killed me if it hadn't been for our other friends intervening.

[At least, that was the best way to put it. Death where Sora's from is quite a bit different from death as most people know it.

Still.]

But he's overcome that. We all have.
